Build an electric guitar
Posted On 16/11/2009 14:57:22 by SteveHowe

These days just about anyone with a bit of diy ability can build an electric guitar.

There is no complicated soundbox to construct, infact the body of the guitar is usually made of a hardwood and can be any shape you want. The neck is a bit more complicated, you need to consider scale length and get accurate spacing of the frets, although bolt on necks are readily available finished and ready to install.

You will need Pickups, which can be single coil ( as used on a stratocaster) or twin coil humbuckers as used on the Les Paul types.

You will need a bridge. A fixed or hardtail bridge is probably best for a first project.

You will also require machine heads. which should be the correct type to fit your neck, ie. inline or 3 a side.

Other parts including plastic pickguards, screws and metal parts are also available at Janikas Music Shop.

Have a go. You will find it a very satisfying hobby!

Absolutely agree - I made an electric last year - Les Paul Junior style. Great fun to do and a wonderful guitar to play at the end of it! Photo in my gallery.
