I think it is more complex than just collecting. As a semi pro my guitars are tools of the trade, but like a good tradesman I value good tools. I know my guitars well enough to know which is best for each specific job (strumming, picking, flatpick etc.) and, by the correct choice, can perform better with the right "tool". It gets more complex when I add the fact that I know every mark and ding, everyone of them reminding me of a specific occassion (good and bad alike) and so emotional ties exist. The same happens in most trades. I pay for my music (and food etc.) by working day time as an electrician. I still own tools from my apprentiship, over 30 years ago, and nearly every tool purchased since. Some of it is because "one day day they might be needed" but there is an emotional element to that as well. I recently had some tools stolen and was more upset because a couple were from my apprentiship than I was about the value (even though I wasn't insured). Maybe I am just a hoarder?

You are right!!!!!!

I have two home built electrics, two home built archtops, a home built Classical, a very old classical, an Ayers DSM, a banjo, a Martin travel guitar which came to me with its head broken off and there is always something passing through which I am repairing/setting up/modifying for sombody else.

My wife has one recorder.

I like to think of my guitars as little people, each having it's own personality and voice, I have 5 at the moment........that's my excuse anyway!
