My Progress
Posted On 06/11/2007 13:02:56 by WitchyWoman

In May of this year I was a bit bored. Whilst walking past the tiny music shop in our town, I made a passing comment to my other half and said "I used to play the guitar a bit". So in we went and out I came with my first new guitar. Got home and realised I couldn't remember a thing about playing a guitar

Five months down the line I now have 5 guitars, an Alesis Multimix and a microphone!, why because I joined a guitar forum LOL. After posting my first attempt at recording (a bit of crappy strumming recorded direct to my pc) friends on there said "Yeah, so where's the vocals?". At this point I protested loudly and said "OH NO WAY.....I DON'T SING!" I've never sung loud enough to anything so that anyone else can hear.

To cut a long story short after much encouragement (or was it bullying?) 8 weeks ago I recorded some vocals, and the encouragement and feedback that has followed from them has been enormous. I've joined in with a collaboration, and my most recent recording (The Lesson) is from lyrics written by another forum member, which I put to music.

Getting over nerves and self doubt has been a major hurdle for me. I still can't sing in front of anybody (not even my hubby) but that's a goal I hope to achieve! I'd love to just be able to pick up a guitar and sing a song to somebody.

So in a nutshell:

Playing the guitar 5 months

Singing(?) and recording for 8 weeks

This is what I've done so far:

(click link above, then click "music" on the right hand menu to see all my songs)

Any tips on playing, recording or indeed improving my singing would be greatly appreciated. Singing "Far Far Away" is also an option LOL.

But all in all, I'm having such great fun with all of this and it's all thanks to great people in the music community. With other peoples help and support we can all achieve something we didn't expect to be able to do.

Thanks for reading,

Witchy

Thanks for your kind comments Scorpiodog.

As for playing all five at once, I actually stack them vertically all soundholes pointing outwards and do one great big giant strum at a time, each guitar being tuned to a different string ie one guitar tuned all E, one guitar to A etc....thats the reason I had to buy a sixth, I was missing a high E  Then I fret with my feet.......Easy!

But seriously (oops hope you didn't think I was being serious!) It's nice to rotate them as each one has it's own voice and personality; and plus hubby keeps running of with one or two, so there's plenty left for me when he's practising

You have a really nice voice, Witchy.

And you're right, it really is all about fun, isn't it? And to think people think they have fun singing karaoke. There's something special about making nice noises from a wooden box with strings isn't there?

But how do you manage to play 5 guitars and sing all at the same time?

Thanks Scanbran, not sure about "guts or ability" though. I think it's more complete stupidity and even a touch of sinility, but I'm passed the stage of worrying what anybody will think and just having a great time enjoying myself!
