My Progress
Posted On 06/11/2007 13:02:56 by WitchyWoman

In May of this year I was a bit bored. Whilst walking past the tiny music shop in our town, I made a passing comment to my other half and said "I used to play the guitar a bit". So in we went and out I came with my first new guitar. Got home and realised I couldn't remember a thing about playing a guitar

Five months down the line I now have 5 guitars, an Alesis Multimix and a microphone!, why because I joined a guitar forum LOL. After posting my first attempt at recording (a bit of crappy strumming recorded direct to my pc) friends on there said "Yeah, so where's the vocals?". At this point I protested loudly and said "OH NO WAY.....I DON'T SING!" I've never sung loud enough to anything so that anyone else can hear.

To cut a long story short after much encouragement (or was it bullying?) 8 weeks ago I recorded some vocals, and the encouragement and feedback that has followed from them has been enormous. I've joined in with a collaboration, and my most recent recording (The Lesson) is from lyrics written by another forum member, which I put to music.

Getting over nerves and self doubt has been a major hurdle for me. I still can't sing in front of anybody (not even my hubby) but that's a goal I hope to achieve! I'd love to just be able to pick up a guitar and sing a song to somebody.

So in a nutshell:

Playing the guitar 5 months

Singing(?) and recording for 8 weeks

This is what I've done so far:

Any tips on playing, recording or indeed improving my singing would be greatly appreciated. Singing "Far Far Away" is also an option LOL.

But all in all, I'm having such great fun with all of this and it's all thanks to great people in the music community. With other peoples help and support we can all achieve something we didn't expect to be able to do.

Thanks for reading,

Witchy

Congrats for getting your stuff recorded and on the net - very nice.

I wish I had the guts (and ability) to do the same - keep us up to date on your progress, will you?  I need as much inspiration as I can get!

Martin.

Totally agree Chris. I can never understand when I see posts on forums saying things like "Been playing a year, know a squillion scales and a mountain of theory, but don't know how to play a song yet; am I ready to start learning one?"

Whilst this stuff is important, it's all information that gathers along the way after you start playing music. Start learning a few chords to a few easy songs, have some fun, then find out why you're playing those notes and chords. That's my philosophy anyway!

Five months five guitars thats a good ratio. I like the bit about having fun thats for me what its all about to many people want to get intense about doing something so enjoyable...hey now who's getting intense.  Chris
