I thought I might make my own thickness caliper they are $98.50 on Stewmac so rather than makeing a plywood, pencil and rubber band contraption I used a piece of ally cut to shape its a pain to cut with standard hacksaw blades but thats all I had at the time, I then smoothed the sharp edges with a file I then fitted a guage I brought from Machine Mart for just under £20 and there we have it would'nt win any prizes for looks but works a treat and cheap.
There is a pic in my gallery but I can't get it here!
When you look around at this site have you noticed how many of you have more than one guitar it seems the desire to play does'nt end with just one good guitar, and its not just guitarists my wife has four saxophones and my son the drummer well its best I don't talk about that.
Now to get to the point some of you may be aware that I am lurking on the edges of lutherie and I have found I am looking at wood in a different way even to the point of buying some more although I havent finnished the first guitar........ I think this collecting thing must run deeper than we think. Till next time Chris.
I was not shure that I had the skills to start this project, I was the proud owner of two bits of sitka spruce AA and I was about to join them together at the thin bit!! and then I was to carve out a shallow round channel to take the rosette so it was near enough flush with the surface of the top with no gaps round the edge. I would like to point out that my wood working experience to date was makeing wobbly bits of units out of precut timber and sharpning pencils, however I took my time and it did'nt turn out to bad [see my gallery]. I bet you can't wait for the next thrilling installment. Watch this space.
This tune made me think am I alone or do we all have these tunes you know the ones "If I could just play so and so I would be happy" . Casting my mind back I can't think of the early ones I'm shure Dylan was in there some where but House of the Rising Sun was one and Anji along with Ralph McTell's Streets of London following later Classical Gas and the one that started me thinking Stairway to Heaven is it banned in that many guitar shops?
Whats your landmark tunes?
When you sit down at home and play your acoustic at home its acoustic. You take your acoustic out to play at a gig you mike it up to be heard thats acoustic, next you add a bit of reverb you know just to add that little lift I know how about a modeling type gizmo, now just a minuet I know we're playing an acoustic but we're changing things a bit now is it still acoustic or is it electric played on an acoustic? get my drift. I am no purist just a thought though.
I'm what I call a born again guitarist. in my younger days I played a lot starting in local folk clubs and ending up in a rock band with all styles and shades in between. Then came all the other bits proper jobs wife kids commitment, but now the kids are grown [but still dependents] so I have resumed my search for the holy grail, can I remember how to play this thing? well sort of, not so well at the momment but its comming back to me slowly and I've branched out I'm starting to make one of these things I'll let you know how it goes. You know playing music is catching my wife now plays sax and my son plays drums and my daughter plays on my good nature.
