In celebration of the legendary guitarist Bert Jansch, the 20th anniversary release of BAFTA nominated Acoustic Routes will open in cinemas from 1st March 2013.
Specially filmed on location in Edinburgh, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland, Acoustic Routes charts the story of one of world’s most influential musicians Bert Jansch, with Billy Connolly at the helm and a stellar cast of folk and blues musicians, including Brownie McGhee, Davey Graham, Anne Briggs, Ralph McTell, Wizz Jones, Martin Carthy, John Renbourn, Hamish Imlach, Archie Fisher, Peter Kirtley, Jacqui McShee, Duck Baker, and Al Stewart. Among the many highlights are unique performances of Brownie and Bert playing together in Oakland, along with special collaborations with Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy, Albert Lee, Peter Kirtley and Jacqui McShee. The film also contains the only known surviving footage of Jackson C Frank, together with many previously unpublished archive stills.
As a teenager, in the early 1960’s Bert Jansch sat at the feet of Brownie McGhee at the Howff Folk Club in Edinburgh, mesmerised by ‘Key to the Highway’. Armed with that raw American Blues influence and a bewildering technique, he fashioned sublime interpretations of traditional and blues music on the acoustic guitar, a technique that set him apart from his contemporaries and quickly established him as a pivotal innovator of the new acoustic guitar movement. The result was music that had a profound influence on generations of musicians including Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Jimmy Page, and continues to inspire todays’ generation of guitarists and singers.
This special 20th anniversary version of Acoustic Routes was directed by Jan Leman, and co-produced by Peter Rommel with Johnny Fewings serving as executive producer. The original 16mm film has been digitally re-mastered, and extended, to include many previously unseen performances – most notably the defining version of ‘Blackwater Side’ by Anne Briggs and Bert Jansch, and ‘The Parting’ by Bert Jansch with Peter Kirtley.
Acoustic Routes is released by Absolute Distribution in association with Leman Productions Ltd and Rommel Film e.K.
Acoustic Routes will be released on DVD for the first time on 25th March 2013. In addition, and on this date, 15 previously unreleased music tracks from the film will be released on CD and Vinyl and for digital download.
