Catherwood Guitars, a new Northern Ireland based manufacturer of hand built stringed instruments, in association with Sandarac, an English based specialist seller of handcrafted European musical instruments, are going to London for the first time, exhibiting at the Sundance London Festival of Film and Music, April 25 – 28, 2013.
Established in 2011, Catherwood Guitars is a company of three luthiers building unique handmade stringed instruments from Irish tonewoods. With designs inspired by European classical and jazz guitar makers and the work of Irish artists such as John Luke and Louis le Brocquy, the range includes jumbo, concert and parlour size guitars and Irish traditional instruments including mandolins, mandolas and celtic bouzoukis. At Sundance London we will be partnering with Sandarac, a specialist company who select hand-crafted stringed instruments from amongst the finest craftsmen of Europe to exhibit, show, and sell across the UK.
John Catherwood commented: ‘We are delighted to be invited by Sandarac to be part of their Connoisseur Collection, exhibited at Sundance. We will be one of only four guitar makers on display, in the company of the finest guitars from France, Spain and Germany. Our guitars were chosen by Sandarac when we exhibited for the first time at The Musikmesse in Frankfurt, the world’s largest music show – we stood out because as well as making beautiful instruments we have taken an ethical stand, using only locally grown hardwoods and sustainably sourced timbers.’
‘We are trying to think globally and act locally; using timber that we know is ethically sourced, making instruments in a traditional way with low carbon footprint. We are inspired by the wood and the land it came from and that helps us to build instruments with voices that that will inspire musicians. When you discover that one of our guitars is made from an ash tree which was a sapling in 1550, the date when the first book was printed in Ireland, it already has a story to tell from the moment it is strung up. Our Shanes Castle Oak saw the United Irishmen and the French revolution, our Bryansford Yew was alive when America declared independence. The wood inspires us and we build instruments to inspire musicians.’
Sandarac’s Connoisseur Collection features a single display instrument in six genres, with others available as build to order; Gypsy and Jazz from Maurice Dupont, Flamenco and Classical from Sanchis Lopez, Steel, Strung from AC Guitars, and, of course, the Eco-Acoustic from Catherwood Guitars.
